Summary:TAPE 1: Matthews speaks about her work with the elderly people in the Melbourne Greek community; nursing homes built in the surburbs of Melbourne to cater for the needs of the aging Greek population. TAPE 2: Matthews recalls her early years in Athens, Greece where she was born; her migration to Australia in 1947; her life in Bendigo, Vic.; her primary and secondary schooling; her volunteer work as a driver at a nursing home (1960s); Athenian Club; being Secretary of the Greek Festival, 1976; her religious beliefs; concept of nikokira; her family realtions; Greek cooking; differences in Greek and Australian customs; celebrations, name days, birthdays; rites of passages; concept of lechona; nursery rhymes and lullabies; stories and tales told to children; teaching at Greek school.

Biography:Anna Matthews, public relations officer at Fronthida Care, Australian Greek Society for Care of the Elderly, Vic. a nursing home for Greek elderly people. She was one of the first people who founded the care of the elderly in the Greek community with the establishment of nursing homes and general welfare services. She was born in Athens, Greece and migrated to Australia in 1947.
