| Summary: | Approximately 300,250 people were employed in the City of Melbourne in 2006, at the time of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census, and around 268,000 (or 89%) of them traveled to work in the City of Melbourne on an average day. Understanding the characteristics and potential needs of the working population is useful to the City of Melbourne because many services need to be located where people will be during the day, rather than where they live. Data on how people get to work and where they come from can be useful in planning for roads and public transport services. Knowledge of the City of Melbourne’s working population can also give an understanding of the economic base and employment opportunities available in the municipality, for economic development purposes. City worker numbers and information about the way they travel to the City of Melbourne is also used to calculate daytime populations of City users, which are particularly relevant in a municipality dominated by commercial and industrial areas, like the City of Melbourne. -- TAKEN FROM INTRODUCTION.
