- [1910-1920?]
- 1 manuscript map ; 20.2 x 26.1 cm
- Series:
- Daisy Bates special map collection.
- Notes:
-
- Manuscript map of Australia appearing to be an attempt by Bates to classify Australian Aboriginal Social Organisation based on a modified form of Rev. J. Mathes's "Eaglehawk and Crow" theory. According to this theory there were two fundamental Aboriginal moieties, Eaglehawk and Crow, with Eaglehawk appearing as Cockatoo in some areas. The theory purported to show that there were two fundamentally different populations of Aboriginal people as the result of separate waves of migration into Australia. The map would appear to be an attempt by Bates to show this graphically, with the linguistics line, "Drift of language from NE to SW" showing how the Eaglehawk category had changed to "cockatoo". Consequently it is neither a linguistic or tribal map.
