MS 6225 comprises letters exchanged between Melville and Giblin. The bulk of them fall between the years 1944 and 1950. They have been arranged in chronological order, with undated and incomplete letters placed last, and largely discuss everyday affairs, philosophical matters, current events, academic life, mathematical problems and books they had read. (Giblin influenced and encouraged Melville's reading.) There are also obituaries and tributes to Giblin, including one by Sir Douglas Copland, articles, letters to Melville from Eileen Giblin, J.M. Garland and others, and recipes and notes (4 boxes).

Professor L.F. Giblin was a noted economist and mathematician. Amongst the achievements of his varied career, he was a Labor member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly, a major in the First World War, was Tasmanian Government Statistician, held professorial posts at Melbourne University and various economic advisory posts. His friend and protege, Tony Melville, was Headmaster of The Perse School, Cambridge, England.
