[1980-1996]
24.92 m. (172 boxes + 5 folio boxes) |
| Summary | Correspondence and papers of Lindy Chamberlain, her family, friends and supporters. The early series contain the correspondence and files of the Chamberlain and Murchison families, divided into ordinary and special files. The ordinary files contain correspondence received from family, friends and the Australian public, 1980-1996, and include letters, cards, notes, verses, photographs, telegrams, newsletters, books and drawings. The special files also contain correspondence, besides a wide variety of other materials relating to the inquests, the trial, imprisonment and eventual release of Lindy Chamberlain. Also included are twelve smaller collections of correspondence and newspaper cuttings, as well as the papers of the Chamberlain Information Service. There is also an extensive sequence of material relating to Lindy Chamberlain's autobiography entitled "Through my eyes" published in Oct. 1990. This includes annotated drafts, galley proofs, computer disks, cassette tapes, tape transcripts and memorabilia from the book launch and the promotional tours that followed. |
| Biography/History | On 17 August 1980 Alice Lynne (Lindy) Chamberlain was camping with her husband, Michael, and children at the Ayer's Rock camping ground when her youngest child, Azaria, disappeared from the family tent. Lindy Chamberlain was subsequently convicted of the murder of her daughter and sentenced to life imprisonment. The case attracted wide media coverage and public interest, both within Australia and overseas. All convictions against Lindy and Michael Chamberlain were finally quashed on 15 Sept. 1988. |
