McLaren, peace activist, youth activist, chartered accountant, naval intelligence officer, Victorian politician, speaks of his family background, the strong religious feeling in his childhood and his later involvement with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), how he came to serve as a signaller in the army from 1929 to 1937, his training and career as an accountant from 1930, his interest in the Peace Movement in 1936/37 to later joining the Young Liberals, his concern that political involvement by the Church leads to many internal factions, his impression that those affected adversely by the Depression in Melbourne hid this from others, how clubs helped ease family burdens at that time, why his association with YMCA lasted over 50 years, how as World Work Director of YMCA he because an international representative and his involvement in the Australian Institute of International Affairs, the League of Nations Union and the Youth Council of Victoria, his new job as assistant accountant for the Argus newspaper, the Australian Peace Congress of 1937 and its four vital aims.
McLaren speak of the Australian Youth Congress in Jan. 1938, the effect of the govt. proscribing the Australian Youth Council in 1940, how he attended the YMCA Convention in Toronto and World Youth Congress in New York in 1938, attended the World Conference of Christian Youth in Sept. 1938, returned to Melbourne in Oct. 1939, how he joined the navy in 1942 working for Navy Intelligence in Brisbane and later New Guinea, how he came to enter Victorian politics as an independent for the Glen Iris district in 1946.
