The reference: 1. The proposal is for the progressive replacement of buildings and the provision of facilities needed to support current research programs in Australia's Antarctic Territory. The redevelopment will be carried out over a ten-year period and will involve the replacement of accommodation at Casey, Mawson and Davis bases which is substandard and where maintenance is no longer economical or practicable. 2. The estimated cost of the proposal when referred to the Committee was $58.14 million. This comprises $35.0 million from the Civil Works vote as advised by the Department of Housing and Construction and $23.14 million from the Department of Science and Technology. The latter figure includes estimates for plant and equipment, logistic support and shipping.
