"On January 19, 2003, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) organized an excursion from Lakemba in Sydney to perform the 'Salatul Istisqa', the Muslim prayer for rain. The Muslim community in Sydney, which was experiencing isolation and alienation as a result of the impending war against Iraq, wished to demonstrate its loyalty to the mainstream Australian community in a practical way. At that time, the country was gripped by the worst drought in over 100 years and the Hunter Valley was especially hard hit. The delegation was welcomed by civic dignitaries from Muswellbrook Council including the Mayor, John Colvin, and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and service clubs. The following day there was rain in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, and three and a half weeks later substantial rain fell on the eastern seaboard."--File NLA/16245.
