The monument was erected in 1938 and officially opened in 1939 during the Queanbeyan Centenary Celebrations to commemorate William James Farrer (1845-1906), the famous wheat experimentalist who developed rust-resistant strains of wheat on his property "Lambrigg", at Tharwa. To honour this remarkable pioneer, the Commonwealth printed his picture on the old
