Chaney speaks about becoming aware of Aboriginal disadvantage while a teenager. After graduating from university, he joined the Public Service of Papua New Guinea before entering private law practice in Perth. He speaks about two cases of child removal he was involved with as a lawyer and his concern over Aboriginal social justice issues. Chaney was elected to the Senate in 1974 and was Minister for Aboriginal Affairs from 1978 to 1980. As Minister, he was active in establishing Aboriginal childcare agencies and focussing on Aboriginal self-management. He talks about the Aboriginal Development Commission under Charles Perkins, his relationship with Nugget Coombs and Judith Wright, and the Aboriginal treaty movement in the 1980s.
After leaving Parliament in 1993, Chaney maintained his involvement with Aboriginal issues. He talks about his involvement with Native Title Tribunal and the National Reconciliation Council. He also expresses his views on Reconciliation, the protection of Aboriginal children today, government service delivery models, and the Bringing Them Home Report.
