The papers in MS 9389 comprise general correspondence, diaries, reports on manuscripts and theses by others, subject files, sports ephemera, ephemera on the Australian bicentennary and drafts of articles, lectures and reviews by Stuart Macintyre. There are also files relating to citizenship and civics and Macintyre's membership of the Civics Expert Group, the Civics Education Group and the Centenary of Federation Victoria Committee. Included in the collection is publishers' correspondence, drafts, book reviews, publishing agreements and research material relating to his books Militant, Ormond College centenary essays, Winners and losers, The labour experiment, Foundations of arbitration, A colonial liberalism, A history for a nation: Ernest Scott and the making of Australian history, The discovery of Australian history 1890-1939, and The Reds (66 boxes, 1 fol. box).
The Acc03.253 instalment comprises transcripts, correspondence and other papers relating to the inquiry into the awarding of a first class honours degree to Joel Hayward by the University of Canterbury, including the Working Party's report (2 boxes).
The Acc06.108 instalment comprises correspondence, ca. 1998-2005, folders of talks, book reviews and short written pieces with accompanying correspondence, ca. 1984-2004, and publications, ca. 1993-1995. There are papers from the 1980s including conferences, premier's literary awards, talks and projects, and papers from the 1990s such as pamphlets, newsletters and lectures (36 boxes).
The Acc23.011 instalment includes correspondence; notes and drafts for Stuart Macintyre's publications; business records; photographs; speeches; lectures; appointment diaries; and awards (52 boxes, 2 packets).
- Biography/History:

Historian and academic. Stuart Forbes Macintyre has been the Ernest Scott Professor of History at the University of Melbourne since 1990. In 1999, he was appointed dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne. Macintyre has written extensively on Australian history and undertakes research in the areas of labour history and the history of communism, history and civics, and Australian federation. Among his publications is The Reds: the Communist Party of Australia from origins to illegality, which won The Age Non-Fiction Book of the Year prize in 1998. His most recent book, The poor relation (2010), is a study of the social sciences in Australia. Macintyre is a former president of the Australian Historical Association and has also served as president of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He was a member of the National Library of Australia Council from 1987-1996. In 2001 Macintyre was the recipient of a Centenary Medal for service to the centenary of federation celebrations in Victoria.
