Webb, an Antarctic explorer, talks about awards he won during WWI and then gives some background information about the Shackleton Expedition to the Antarctic in 1907-1909, Sir Douglas Mawson's part in that expedition and his preparations to lead an Australian expedition to the Antarctic in 1912. Webb gives his view of Mawson as a man and a leader; difficulties involved during the expedition in particular the trip to and from the south magnetic pole; comparisons between Mawson and Scott and their respective expeditions and the lack of public recognition for Mawson and his expeditions.

Eric Webb was one of a party including R. Bage and F. Hurley who visited the south magnetic polar region 301 miles from the base camp at Cape Denison.
