MS 5274 comprises: 1. Curtin constituency correspondence files, 1950-1969. 2. Pamphlets, reports, speeches, leaflets, statements and printed ephemera relating to Australian politics, economics, post-war planning and reconstruction, religion, defence and regional security, foreign relations and international affairs, immigration, education, law, the media, public health, geography, aviation and history. 3. Collection of historical source documents on Australian Aboriginal welfare and the Northern Territory, 1945-1963. These include reports, conference papers, press statements, development plans, ministerial notes, correspondence with Charles Duguid, Olive Pink and Lionel Rose, and publications on agriculture, animal industries, mining and other subjects. 4. Ten bound volumes of articles, speeches and broadcasts by Hasluck on foreign affairs, the United Nations, politics and government, Northern Territory, Aboriginal welfare and other subjects, 1925-1989. Speeches including diplomatic, political, ministerial and vice-regal orations and addresses, 1969-1974 (40 boxes).

Historian, poet, diplomat, politician and governor-general. Paul Meernaa Caedwalla Hasluck was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1905 and educated at Perth Modern School. He graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Master of Arts degree and joined university staff as a tutor, then lecturer, in history. He became an officer with the Department of External Affairs in 1941-1947. In 1949 Hasluck entered federal politics as the Liberal member of the House of Representatives for the Perth seat of Curtin. He was the Minister for Territories from 1951-1963, and Minister for External Affairs from 1964-1969.
Following his resignation from Parliament in 1969, Hasluck was appointed governor-general of Australia, 1969-1974. Hasluck's publications include Black Australians: a survey of native policy in Western Australia, 1829-1897 (1942), The government and the people, 1939-1941 (1952), Native welfare in Australia: speeches and addresses (1953), The government and the people, 1942-1945 (1970), Mucking about: an autobiography (1977), Diplomatic witness: Australian foreign affairs, 1941-1947 (1980) and several volumes of poetry. Hasluck died in Perth, Western Australia, in 1993.
