Matthews recalls the beginnings of Women's Liberation Movement (WLM) in Adelaide engendered by various factors such as the political ferment taking place among students at the University of Adelaide; pressures from different groups which allied themselves with Women's Liberation; the relationship with the political Left and allied movements as well as the genesis of the Gay Liberation Movement and the Radical Psychiatry Movement; the use of musical shows in Adelaide as a means of attracting people to the WLM; how she became an academic in Women's Studies; the writing of her book Good and Mad Women; her involvement in the gay movement in Sydney; how she came to the ANU as a lecturer in Women's Studies; the place of Women's Studies in university; her own research interests and their connection to feminism and the WLM; her search to define the pleasure in women's lives as opposed to the Feminist conception of women's lives as oppressed and brutalised; modern woman's search for health and beauty; the conundrum of women's sexuality; the role and relevance of Women's Studies today.
