Mungo Ballardie MacCallum, journalist and broadcaster, talks about his childhood, father and grandfather; his early and tertiary education; student days at St. Andrew's College; obtaining a cadetship with The Sydney Morning Herald; training as a journalist; varying styles of editorship at The Sydney Morning Herald and the conservative nature of that newspaper; life as a journalist in Canberra; the leading pre World War II political journalists; relations between journalists and politicians; he recalls his experiences in failing Navy and Air Force recruitment during World War II; work as editor on the army journal, S.A.L.T., and the positive reception which it received from the Australian Forces Fighting overseas; the establishment of the Army education service; difficulties that he faced as editor working on S.A.L.T.; Massey Stanley; his duties in the United Kingdom Office of Information, explaining Australia to possible British migrants; employment in the A.B.C. as Features Editor; nature of the radio feature; his journey back to England, after obtaining an Imperial Trust bursary to learn about radio and television broadcasting and his experiences in the British broadcasting industry; his return to Australia and involvement in training A.B.C. personnel on matters to do with television broadcasting; the early history of A.B.C. broadcasting; the A.B.C. and its relationship with their political masters; the organisation of A.B.C. radio and television units; Sir Charles Moses; the quality of T.V. and radio programs; problems of laissez faire television in Australia during the early stage of its history; politicians and how they related to television interviews; the difficulties of broadcasting live; his plans after leaving the A.B.C.
