- Biography/History:
-
Eric Henry Stoneley Burhop was born in Hobart on January 31, 1911 and graduated from Melbourne University in 1933 with a Masters in Science. He later studied under Rutherford and Oliphant at Cambridge University obtaining his doctorate in nuclear physics in 1938. This specialisation lead him to collaborate on the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb. Later Burhop was to campaign via many international organisations for greater responsibility in the use of science, especially atomic power, winning the 1972 Lenin Peace Prize. However, his socialist advocacy attracted the attention of Australian and British authorities and possibly hampered his career. He died in London on January 22, 1980.
