Jack Neary, a theatre promotor, speaks of his early childhood experiences; training for the Catholic priesthood from age 15; his experience in amateur singing such as Australia's Amateur Hour; how he formed the musical group the Four Guardsmen and winning on Australia's Amateur Hour; working with great comedians and the comedy business, the lack of performing opportunities for young performers today; his experiences on the Tivoli Circuit with the quartet and its eventual demise; his brush with underworld characters; how he commenced his own artists management agency; his dealings with Bobby Limb and their first recording "We'll build a bungalow"; how he obtained the Capitol Theatre in Sydney as a venue for his acts; discovering Dawn Lake and teaming her with Bobby Limb; the introduction of World Championship Cricket; various tours he organised including the Von Trapp Family Singers; the tour with Mel Torme; how in organising the first tour of England he made friends with Edward Heath; meeting his wife; how he completed three years partnership with David Martin and later going into partnership with Michael Edgley to form Aztec Services; achieving front page publicity for his acts; his association with Ken Brodziak; the full story of the Beatles Australian tour.
Neary talks about the first tour of the Moscow Circus; touring Peter, Paul & Mary; how he began in television and the problems associated with this media; how he packaged shows for Channel 7 and what led him to be banned from the station; how he set up N.L.T. and made films for television; how he decided to make films; his involvement in the Vincent Inquiry; how he was instrumental in having Senator McClelland set up the Film Commission; establishing variety performances mixing Australian and international artists at the Sydney Opera House; how in accepting a post with the Broadcast Control Board it precipitated a coronary after 3-4 years; how after a short retirement he returned to Sydney to lobby for the Sydney Entertainment Centre and the administrative syndicate he put together; how he staged the first Schools Spectacular and later approach Tony Metherell to set up a Talent Development Program; how he became involved in World Series sporting tours, discussion of his philosophy and attitude to life and his fight against serious illness; the value he places on his marriage; the importance of the Talent Development Program; how he wishes he had been a tougher negotiator; how he organised the Pope's 1978 tour of Australia.
