Jolliffe, bush cartoonist and comic strip artist, born in Portsmouth, England moved with his family to Australia in 1911. He recalls his childhood years; at 16 years age when he "went bush" i.e. worked in the country, as a boundary rider, rabbit trapper, shearing hand, etc; 1928 (aged 21) returned to Sydney where he had a few formal lessons in illustrating at East Sydney Technical College but for the most part was self taught; window cleaning job at Union House, Sydney for an number of years before joing The Bulletin fulltime as a cartoonist.
Jolliffe recalls his war service as a camouflage officer with the RAAF roaming Arnhem Land and the West Australian coast where he met Bill Harney, Outback storyteller and through him learned about Aboriginals; in the 1940s and 1950s a number of trips to the Outback with Bill Harney & once with a National Geographic expedition illustrating traditional Aboriginal lifestyles & customs; in 1944 his brief job on Smith's Weekly in Sydney where he met some of Australia's well known black & white illustrators; about one of his bush cartoons published in Permanent Buidling Association monthly magazine, Corroboree being the subject of a Anti-Discrimination Board case; publishing his own annual calendar and comic book.
