MS 9363 comprises files maintained by David Armstrong from his time as an undergraduate until about 1980. They provide a comprehensive record of his philosophical writings, including essays, articles, lectures and book reviews and also associated correspondence, reviews of his early books and notes taken at lectures he attended. There is also a series of files of speeches, addresses, articles and other papers on social and political issues, especially during the Vietnam War years. Finally, there is correspondence, submissions, petitions, circulars, cuttings and other papers pertinent to disputes within the Department of Philosophy at the University of Sydney, 1965-1985. Correspondents include J.J.C. Smart, Alan Stout, Eugene Kamenka, Owen Harries, Keith Campbell, John Burnheim and Michael Devitt (27 boxes).
The Acc99.224 instalment comprises files, drafts, typescripts and other preliminary material, printouts, publishing contracts, and correspondence relating to several of Armstrong's publications. Also included is material from Armstrong's academic career: a bound volume of his Ph.D. thesis with examiner's comments, a bibliography of his work, correspondence from the 1980s and 1990s generally with Australian and overseas colleagues, four commonplace books, 1954, drafts of lectures, 1981-1982, offprints of reviews, 1982-1996, general academic files, and correspondence and ephemeral material from a trip to Poland in 1985 (4 boxes, 12 cartons, 7 letter boxes).
The Acc01.269 instalment comprises correspondence files in A-Z order (5 cartons).
The Acc12.001 instalment comprises correspondence and notes files, including conference notes and articles relating to specific philosphers, in A-Z order (47 boxes).
- Biography/History:

Philosopher. David Malet Armstrong was educated at the Universities of Sydney and Oxford. He was lecturer in philosophy at the University of Melbourne, 1956-1964, and Challis Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney, 1964-1991. He has been emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney since 1992. Armstrong is the author of several books on perception and the theory of knowledge.
