Journalist and writer. Bernard Charles Cronin was born in Middlesex, England, in 1884, and, in 1890, joined other members of his family in Australia. He worked variously as a cattle farmer, salesman and clerk, taking up writing in his spare time. His first novel, The coastlanders, was published in 1918. It was followed by other novels, short stories, poems and a radio play, Stampede (1937). As a journalist, Cronin worked for the Melbourne Herald. In 1920, he was involved in establishing a group for struggling authors which later became the Society of Australian Authors with Cronin as its first president. In 1933, he founded the Quill Club. He was also a member of the International PEN Club. Cronin died in Melbourne in 1968.
