MS 5799 comprises articles and addresses by A.T. Shakespeare; subject files relating to the civic, cultural and sporting life of Canberra, 1930-1972 and the N.S.W. Country Press Association. Publications, press cuttings, and correspondence are included in most of the subject files.
The Acc09/4 instalment comprises papers relating to Shakespeare's association with The Canberra times. There is a folder of early papers containing minutes of the first meeting called to discuss the possibility of establishing a newspaper in the Federal Capital, building quotes, correspondence, ephemera, a black and white photograph of The Canberra times building under construction in 1925, and financial records including statements, account books, and lists of creditors. In addition, copies of "leading articles" written by Shakespeare, c. 1935-1945, typescripts of speeches given by him and his press pass, 1927-1928.

Newspaper executive. Arthur Thomas Shakespeare worked on the Sydney morning herald for ten years before joining his brothers in Canberra where their father had founded The Canberra times in 1926. He retained chairmanship of the company from his father's death in 1938 until his own death in 1975, but relinquished the managing editorship in 1964 when the paper was sold to John Fairfax and Sons Ltd. Shakespeare was founder and Chairman of Directors of Canberra Television Limited who were granted a TV licence in 1960. He was associated with a wide variety of local affairs, was a member of the A.C.T. Legislative Council and a life member of the New South Wales Country Press Association.
