MS 5710 comprises manuscript music scores of Hugo Alpen's compositions: song books and text books which contain his work, 1897-1926; three letters written by Sarah Alpen to her daughter Ida Crisp, 1901-1902; a copy book and press cuttings; three framed photographs: Hugo Alpen (n.d.), Beatrice Alpen, 1877-1907 (n.d.) and Alpen's daughters (n.d.). Attached to many items are typescript notes of explanation written by Paul Alpen, 1971. Paul Alpen's translation, in 1957 for the Cabinet Secretariat, Prime Minister's Department, of a theoretical study of the European Economic Community written in Dutch by P.J. Verdoorn and titled, An economic integration of Europe: a study of its background and consequences (The Hague, 1952). In addition, genealogical papers of the Alpen family mainly on Hugo Alpen, some of which are in Medieval German.
The Acc06/190 instalment consists of two photographs of Hugo Alpen and his daughter Gladys (?) and a small photograph album with federation ribbon of the family home in Strathfield, 1901.
- Biography/History:

Hugo Alpen arrived in Australia in ca. 1863. His grandson, C. Paul Alpen described him as "an early colonial composer". Hugo married Sarah Brown in 1869 in Albury, New South Wales. Thirteen children were born. Hugo Alpen retired as Superintendent of the Music Department of Public Instruction, N.S.W. in 1908. He died in 1917. Paul Alpen was an officer in the Prime Minister's Department and a great grand-daughter is Mrs Margaret Gillespie (née Crisp) of Queanbeyan, New South Wales.
