The papers were arranged and listed by Officers of the Australian Science Archives Project in the following series: Personal - Biographical: includes copies of letters sent by William Briggs (father) to his father in England (1868-77). Correspondence, 1938-39 (photocopies). The correspondents are E. Rutherford and J.D. Cockcroft. The originals are in Cambridge University Library. Correspondence, 1938-39: relating to the National Standards Laboratory CSIR. The correspondents are David Rivett, R.S. Wallace, Sir Mark Oliphant and C.D. Ellis. Correspondence, 1946-47: pertaining to Briggs' work for the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission. The correspondents include Edna Briggs (wife), A.E.V. Richardson and John Dedman. Correspondence, 1958: concerning his retirement dinner in December 1958. Photographs, 1924-83.

Briggs' career included working for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (1939-45), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research (1939-58) and the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission (1945-58). Briggs did his PhD under E. Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University (1925-26). President of the Australian Institute of Physics (1950-52).
