Letters of Sir John Mason to his family during the years 1945-1984. The majority of the letters are addressed to his parents and, after their deaths in 1967 and 1968, to his sister, Mary Mason. The collection also includes some letters from Lady Mason. The earliest letters relate to Mason's career in the British Army, which included active service in India and Korea as well as a period of study at Cambridge. The letters from India in 1947 describe the last days of the British Raj, and those from Korea cover the early stages of the war, from August 1950 - August 1951. The later letters describe his experiences as a diplomat based in Rome (1954-1956), Warsaw (1956-1959), Damascus (1961-1965), New York (1968-1971), Tel Aviv (1978-1980) and Canberra (1980-1984).
