Petty speaks of his family background and his childhood in Doncaster in Melbourne, home influences particularly religion, his education including football, how he later worked in the family orchard, his involvement in animation and commercial art studio, how he did book decoration for Colourgravure, how he eventually undertook RMIT night art classes, his time in London which included the influences which shaped his cartooning, commercial art, working for Punch, theatre design and his political interests, how he travelled in Europe, his time in New York freelancing for the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and New Yorker, his return to Australia and his post at the Sydney Mirror, later the Australian and the Age, his choice of themes, his interest in economics and politics, his work patterns, his involvement in animation particularly films such as Australian History, Money Game and Leisure, his publications include his cartoon collection, The Sixties, the role of cartoons and satire in society.
