MS 5959 comprises: 1. A handwritten manuscript titled "Birds from the magic mountain", with original illustrations in ink, watercolour and crayon, describing some of the factual and fictional birds of Indonesia. 2. An illustrated, handwritten manuscript titled "Ayam-ayam kesayangan", vol. 3, containing many and varied writings and paintings of his native land on his return from many years' sojourn in distant countries beyond the sea, also known as "The return of the prodigal". 3. Manuscript diaries from 1930 to 1988. These include two diaries titled Disastres de la Guerra for July 1943 (vol. 9) and January 1944 (vol. 14), both illustrated with pen and ink wash. 4. Two notebooks, 1939 (7 folders, 48 v., 6 oversize volumes).

Artist, author and diarist. Donald Stuart Leslie Friend was born in Sydney in 1915. He studied and exhibited art overseas as well as in Australia, and won competitions such as the Blake Prize for religious painting in 1955. After periods of living in various countries, including five years in Ceylon, he returned to Australia in 1962, but moved to Bali in 1967. Friend died in 1989. - The National Library of Australia received the Donald Friend diaries as donations from Friend in several instalments beginning in February 1984. At the time of Friend's death in 1989, the majority of his pre-1960 diaries, dating from 1930, and totalling 34 volumes, had been acquired by the Library.
- In 1992 the Library acquired ten further diaries, dating 1959-1988, from the Donald Friend Estate.
- The July 1943 and January 1944 diaries of Donald Friend were donated to the National Library of Australia by Emeritus Professor David de Long, Philadelphia, PA, 11 January, 2010. These two diaries were acquired by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. from Friend and were among the personal effects of Kaufmann subsequently left with de Long.
