- Summary:
-
"John Bucknell Waldren began cracking macadamia nuts for sale around 1907 and was still hard at it when I photographed him fifty years later. In that time he reckoned he had cracked fifteen million nuts to produce around eighty tons of kernels. He pressed some of the kernels to produce macadamia oil, which is both nutritious and delicious. Mechanised competitors in the late 1950's took over the cottage industry pioneered by John Waldren. Hawaii is among the world's largest producer of macadamia nuts, the industry started with a handful of nuts taken there from Australia in 1892. " -- Description supplied by photographer.
