Isabel McBryde, Emerita Professor of Archaeology, born in Fremantle, WA in 1934 speaks about her childhood during wartime; and her family background; her schooling in Melbourne; studying Latin and History at the University of Melbourne; studying prehistoric archaeology at Cambridge (1958-59); returning to Australia and her appointment as a lecturer in prehistory and ancient history at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale; her doctoral studies at UNE where she conducted an extensive study of Aboriginal society in the New England region; changes to the discipline of archaeology including scientific advances and social transformations; her development of approaches to research that involved consultation with Aboriginal people and other stakeholders; the formation and development of the Australian Institute for Aboriginal Studies; working with heritage agencies including National Parks & Wildlife Service of NSW and Australian Heritage Commission.
McBryde talks about her involvement in research to support the nomination of the Willandra Lakes area for World Heritage; work on the board of management of Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park; her involvement in the International Commission on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the Australian Archaeological Association; the rise of historical archaeology as a discipline; her experiences with publishers; the release of her revised doctoral thesis as 'Aboriginal prehistory in New England: an archaeological survey of northeastern New South Wales' (1974); winning a Nuffield Fellowship (1968); moving to Canberra where she became a senior lecturer, reader and eventually a professor at Australian National University (ANU); the study of the Mount William greenstone quarries in Victoria and the distribution of artefacts along extensive trade routes; work with the linguist Luise Hercus in Central Australia; study of photographers J. W. Lindt and Thomas Dick; her reflections on the many changes she has witnessed during her time as an archaeologist.
