- Biography/History:
-
On the 28 May 2004, Senator the Hon. Amanda Vanstone, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, dedicated three artworks at Reconciliation Place. Two of the artworks address the theme of the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The third work addresses the theme of Indigenous leadership and, in particular, recognises the achievements of Vincent Lingiari and Neville Bonner, who worked for many years to improve conditions for Aboriginal people and became a voice for their people. Reconciliation Place is between Questacon and High Court in the Australian Capital Territory. Reconciliation Place recognises, through commemorative artworks the importance of understanding the shared history of indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. It portrays the shared journey of reconciliation, past, present and future. It is a prominent public symbol of a commitment to heal the wounds of the past, and the desire as a nation to move forward together and to share a harmonious future.
