MS 10041 comprises papers that relate to the life and work of Australian artist Nora Heysen. The papers include letters, photographs, catalogues, newspaper clippings, personal papers (including an extract of her birth certificate), art publications, and sound and video material. The bulk of the collection is a large series of personal correspondence retained by Nora (32 boxes, 3 fol. boxes).
- Biography/History:

Artist. Nora Heysen was born in 1911, the fourth daughter of (Sir) Hans and Sallie (née Bartels) Heysen of Hahndorf, South Australia. She studied art in Adelaide and London. In the year following her return to Australia in 1937, she became the first woman to win the Archibald Prize. In 1943, Heysen was appointed an official war artist, commissioned to depict the women's war effort. In 1993, she received the Australia Council's Award for Achievement in the Arts, and was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1998 for service to art as a painter. Heysen died in Sydney in 2003.
