When major breakaways occurred during the afternoon of the 17th January 2003, with the Broken Cart fire in NSW followed by the Stockyard, Bendora and McIntyres Hut fires, all personnel were withdrawn from the ACT fires to prepare for the eventual run of the fires out of the mountains into rural areas to the west of the Murrumbidgee River.
