- Summary:
-
"Ballineen Homestead, Apollo Road at 2350 hrs, 17:01:2003. There were titanic forces at work, first the freshening north-westerlies pushed the fire down the valley peppering the forest and shrublands with spot fires, these then ran together and blew up into the tree tops where great crimson waves formed and lashed and rolled up the mountain side with a great roar and lit up the valley like it was a midday. Then, when all had quietened and the smoke lifted, every stick of timber flamed on in unison as an afterglow for the fiery maelstrom. Afterwards the Group Officer from the Hunter Valley taskforce said to me "I have NEVER seen ANYTHING like this before!". These were the words of an experienced fireman from a district where serious fires occur nearly every other year"--Note from the photographer.
