John Cargher, born London, 1919, talks about his family background; the death of his mother and sister; attending boarding school in Poland; being sent to live with relatives in Spain for 2 years; joining father in England, life and difficulties with new stepmother; his education; time spent in a children's home in Kilburn; training as a turner & fitter and then tool maker; the Depression; assisting German Jewish immigrants with visas and paperwork; his job as an assistant cameraman through father's customers; his interest in opera and ballet, Sadler's Wells (1935-39); the amateur ballet company 'Le Ballet Trois Art' (1938), acting as manager, a three month run at the Lyric Theatre from November 1939; WWII experiences in London; his marriage to Elizabeth Shutie; his record collection; post war running a gallery; touring exhibition of Old Masters through North America (1947); restarting the Ballet company and beginning a theatrical agency; the move to Australia; George J. Coles; his first impressions of Australia; starting a record store, which was to become the biggest record retailer in Melbourne; buying advertising to run record reviews; reading advertisements on radio station 3KZ; being heard by the ABC and offered a 13 week contract for a one-hour music program.
Cargher discusses techniques for developing radio programs; the ABC charter to play Australian music, Singers of Renown (1966), Music for Pleasure (1967); following a second 13 week program with the ABC, the program continued; the process for putting together Singers of Renown; structuring the program around voice types and types of song; being made permanent staff at the ABC at the age of 80; using own records for the shows, timing speech and tracks, time spent putting together a program; doing two programs as well as full time as the Managing Director of the National Theatre; the impact of technology, process of recording music; the longevity of his radio program; his writing career, starting at the Bulletin (1965), leaving after 30 years; his 20 years as manager of the National Theatre; the formation of the College of the Arts' Opera School; expertise at hiring the right people and as a businessman; Opera Australia; Opera News magazine; the sound quality at the Sydney Opera House; theatres in Australia; Melbourne's State Theatre; his awards, Member of the Order of Australia, BP Arts Media Award; changes in the arts over his lifetime; the death of his wife (1991); his remarriage in 2000; his grandsons.
