F.W. Ludwig Leichhardt, a Prussian scientist, arrived in Australia in 1841 and is noted for his expedition's long overland journey from Oct. 1, 1844 from Jimbour Station on the Darling Downs to Port Essington, an early military settlement in the Northern Territory. They completed their journey on Dec. 17, 1845 and were later claimed as national heroes. His second expedition aimed to cross the northern part of the continent then travel the west coast down to Perth commenced from Darling Downs in Dec. 1846 but they returned prematurely to Cecil Plains Station in July 1847, cut short by ill-health, heavy rain and loss of stock. In his final attempt to achieve this goal Leichhardt and his small inexperienced party departed from near Roma, Qld. in April 1848 only to disappear without a trace.
- Notes:
-
- Map of the Maranoa District of the Darling Downs Region, Queensland as it was first chartered by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt on his six-week expedition from August 9 to September 14, 1847 covering the area between Henry Stuart Russell's station, Cecil Plains, to the Balonne River. The map itself covers an area marked by parts of the Rivers Balonne including Horsetrack Creek (a tributary river course), Maranoa and Dawson and includes some topographical landmarks and placenames. In addition, the map has been annotated in india ink in the hand of Ludwig Leichhardt with some placenames, comments, at the right side with latitudes, at the bottom with longitudes including "Approximate latitude of Dried Beef Creek", as well as a dedication "To A. Hodgson Esq., Ludwig Leichhardt" in the bottom right corner of the sheet.
- Title supplied at auction.
- The map is a reproduction of an original sketch by Leichhardt and produced in Sydney in 1847 in a limited run of 15 lithographs to be presented to a select few including the pastoralist politician Henry Dangar and Henry Stuart Russell as well as the then NSW Commissioner of Crown Lands Christopher Rolleston. This copy of the map is dedicated to one of these select recipients, a squatter named Arthur Hodgson of Eton Vale, later Sir Arthur Hodgson, MLC, MLA, Member for Clarence and Darling Downs, 1858-1859, Member of Newcastle, 1859-1860.
- Later the lithograph was entitled: "Sketch map of the Balonne River and country he had ridden over done at Cecil Plains, August 1847 by Ludwig Leichhardt and given to me" and another version reproduced in: The genesis of Queensland / Henry Stuart Russell. Sydney : Turner & Henderson, 1888.
