James Chalmers was born in Scotland in 1841. In 1861 he joined the Glasgow City Mission, and after eight months the London Missionary Society sent him to Cheshunt College near London. In 1865 he was ordained to the Christian ministry. He arrived in Rarotonga in 1867, and then went to New Guinea in 1877. He was known by the natives as Tamate.
