-
Tom Fitzgerald, born in Sydney in 1918, became a journalist after graduating from University of Sydney with a degree in economics and worked in Federal Treasury before serving with the RAAF in World War II. He edited Wild Cat Monthly (1949-52) then joined the Sydney Morning Herald as Financial Editor (1952-70), He developed a reputation as an investigative reporter inclined to criticise government economic policy or uncover corporate fraud. With George Munster in 1958 he cofounded Nation, a progressive journal that campaigned against censorship and the White Australia Policy, and later in 1972 merged with the Sunday Review to became Nation Review. Fitzgerald was editorial director for News Ltd. (1970-72) and later became an economic advisor to both federal and state governments. His 1974 report into the mining industry uncovered large scale tax avoidance by companies and through the 1980s he warned of the consequences of financial deregulation.
