Halina Szunejko talks about her family and childhood; growing up in war torn Poland; her escape to Tanganyika, Africa; her life experiences in the numerous refugee camps; arriving in Perth, Western Australia (1950s); being unable to speak English; her hardships; new life in a strange land; her education at Santa Maria Ladies College in Perth; graduating as a qualified teacher from the Claremont Teachers College (1956); her experiences as a teacher; challenges faced as the first female Principal at Kwinana Senior High School (1990); her greatest achievements; becoming principal at Hampton Senior High School; retiring (2000); looking back at her time as a teacher and Principal; her experiences in the Australian education system; being the first Polish woman in Australia to receive the OAM award; her award the 'Gold Medal of Polonia Restituta' (1993) from the Republic of Poland; her extensive work within the Polish Community; growth of the community; current system of education in Australia; performance pay for teachers, Government funding and policy; teachers facing difficulties today in their job as educators; future of education in Australia; future of the Polish Community.

Halina Szunjeko was born in Nowopole, Poland in 1936. She has been awarded for her work within the Western Australian Education System and her contribution to the Polish Community of Perth. In 1989 she was awarded 'The Order of Australia Medal'.
