- Biography/History:
-
Jim Taylor was born in Alexandria, Sydney in 1901. In March 1917, aged 16, he enlisted in the AIF and served in France with the 34th Battalion, where he was wounded and gassed on the Somme. In 1919 he matriculated from King's College, London, and studied science at Sydney University in 1920. In 1923 he joined the NSW Police. He transferred to the New Guinea Police in Rabaul in 1928-1931 in Sept. 1926 and in Feb. 1927, moved to Salamaua as a kiap (patrol officer). He returned to Rabaul in 1928-31 to clean up police corruption and then served as a kiap for the next eighteen years, principally in the Highlands. From March-August 1933, Taylor led the Hagen-Sepik Patrol from Mt Hagen to the Dutch New Guinea border. This was, at the time, the longest patrol in PNG history.
