Tom Hafey talks about his early life in Victoria and Canberra, A.C.T.; his family background; the Depression; his love of sport; his schooling; his memories of the WWII; football training and matches, his boyhood football heroes; his early work history and apprenticeship as a printer/compositor; playing organised football in under-18s, progressing to seniors; winning best-and-fairest awards; how the war affected many players' careers; being recruited by Richmond (Football Club); Frank Findlay's gym, weight training; his promotion to the senior team, playing forward and rover; training routines; the facilities at Richmond; player payments, £10 per game; Roy Wright; combining work with training; missing most of his second season (1954) due to illness; playing his final game of season with Richmond Reserves, Reserves won VFL premiership; Footscray's win over Melbourne for the 1954 senior flag; how after summer training and playing practice matches in 1959 he was dropped from the Richmond list, his reaction to being delisted; his lost opportunities to go coaching because he was delisted so late; working with kids in the Richmond community; playing in the Sunday Amateurs League, with Richmond Amateurs, the 'Rosellas', named after the Rosella factory, ex VFL and VFA players in the competition, winning the premiership, the big crowds and big money bet on matches; working in the printing trade; meeting his wife and marriage; buying a milk bar, the trade and hours; taking a job as coach of Shepparton, his wages and country football; becoming the Richmond coach, which became the best side in the competition, coaching them to four premierships.
