The land on which the township of Wallaroo stands was held by Walter Watson Hughes from 1857. The lease stretched from a point 3 km south of Point Riley, south-east beyond Kadina, then south to include Moonta, finally rejoining the coast at Tiparra Springs. Copper desposits were discovered near the site in 1859, and in 1862 Hughes laid out the township. Wallaroo's primary importance was based on its role as the major port for the vast copper deposits which were found and mined at Moonta.
Ancillary map includes mineral claims 980 ("Mills") and 930 ("John Taylor") as well as Walter Watson Hughes of Bald Hill. In 1861 Mills, Taylor and Hughes were involved in a dispute over rights to mineral claims around Bald Hill ("Mills vs Moonta"). The confusion was compounded by alleged vagueness on the part of Mills in his original application and description of the area. The claims were ultimately awarded to Hughes who went on to form the Moonta Mining Company.

- National Library of Australia's copy has ink stains in upper of each map. Note that the ancillary map title was altered in pencil obscuring the no. of miles south of Wallaroo and substituting '20,000' in pencil. Annotations in pen include extensive updating of status of claims, notably marking with 'F' any claim forfeited since this map was issued, as well as annotation over legend "marked F declared forfeited in[?] gazette June 27 1861, July 4 [1861]"
