In 1513 the great Strassburg cartographer Martin Waldseemuller published an edition of Ptolemy's Geographia that broke new ground for incorporating modern maps of all known parts of the world. Recognising the importance of this atlas, Lorenzo Fries, physician, cosmographer and geographer, produced a slightly reduced-size version for the popular market, which appeared in four editions of 1522, 1525, 1535 and 1541. In addition to reproducing Waldseemuller's maps, Fries produced an addtional five original maps, including this map basing its style on the 1507 world map produced by Waldseemuller.
