Mrs Taylor is the mother of a large family, the youngest of whom was born in 1932. Her husband had worked on the wharf until the 1928 strike but had no work after that on the wharves. The family was without a regular means of sustenance from that time until Mr Taylor could be persuaded to take the dole. She talks about her husband's various money raising ventures, such as selling and collecting bottles, selling manure; the activities of the sustenance inpectors; the struggles of a large family living in a middle class suburb to keep up the payments on the house, to stop the piano being repossessed, to feed and clothe a growing family and in general to keep their end up.
