MS Acc10.197 comprises research materials, drafts, typescripts, extracts, reviews, publisher correspondence and reading notes for Sons of the rumour; material relating to The land where stories end; correspondence and edit notes relating to In the new country; papers relating to Foster's National Library of Australia Harold White Fellowship; correspondence with agents; and, general literary correspondence. The correspondents include Geoffrey Dutton, Annie Proulx, Susan Lever, Nicholas Hasluck, Randolph Stow, Jack Hibberd, Nick Jose, Michael McGirr, Melissa Lucashenko, Bruce Roberts and Martin Thomas. There are also family letters and material relating to a stay at Ucross Foundation, Wyoming, 1997 (5 boxes).

Writer. David Manning Foster was born in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales in 1944 to radio comedian parents. He studied science at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1967 with the University Medal for Chemistry. He completed a doctorate in inorganic chemistry at the Australian National University and spent a year as a fellow of the National Institute of Health in the United States in 1970. Foster worked as a senior research scientist in the Department of Medicine, University of Sydney, 1971-1972, before moving to writing as a full time occupation. He also worked variously as a truck driver, postal worker, labourer, prawn fisher, drummer and swimming pool manager. His novels critique contemporary Australian culture and its postcolonial and imperial foundations. Foster's other interests include tae kwon do and classical literature. Among his accolades are the Patrick White Award in 2010, Harold White Fellowship, 2008, Courier-Mail Book of the Year Award, 1999, James Joyce Foundation Suspended Sentence Award, 1996, The Age Book of the Year Award in 1974 and nine Miles Franklin Award nominations.
