Kim Pitt was born, raised and educated in Sydney. He pursued a naval career graduating from Jervis Bay Naval College. After serving on surface ships he joined the submarine service, going to the UK for training. After leaving the navy with the rank of Commodore, he joined the Australian Antarctic Division as Manager of Operations.
