Janice Crosswhite, born in 1944, discusses her family background; living in fire stations around Melbourne; schooling; her enjoyment of sports and why; studying Physical Education at the University of Melbourne; the Victorian Softball Team; the Victorian Basketball Team; why she chose to pursue particular sports; receiving her secondary teaching certificate at Melbourne Teachers College; graduating (1964); teaching; her masters degree; the importance of strong school principals and staff development; working for the Department of Education; PE programs and curricula that she developed; discrimination within teaching in regard to girls and sport; marriage (1970); her husband and his sporting, academic and career achievements; children; moving to Panton Hill and community involvement there; working within the education and school systems in Canberra; moving to New South Wales; differences in the school systems in N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; cultural differences relating to community sport in N.S.W. and Vic.; regional education committees in N.S.W..
Crosswhite discusses establishing organisations to advocate for women in sport; the Australian WomenSport & Recreation Assocation; team sports as a vehicle for learning, growth and social values; developing leadership; developing policies; models of leadership; attributes of leadership; attributes of leadership particular to sports advocacy; attributes of leadership particular to women; dealing with patriarchal cultures; issues with the term 'leadership'; difficulties women still face in regard to leadership roles; the need to work effectively with men; diversity in committee boards; the need for parity between the sexes in sport; the importance of community participation and volunteering; challenges that community clubs and volunteers face; women colleagues whom she admires; andromorphism and gender testing in women's sport; awards and honours; the sporting cultures in Australia and the U.S; kangaroo culling.
