Saxby talks about his early interest in reading and involvement in children's literature; army experiences in WWII including a correspondence course in freelance journalism while in New Guinea; experiences at Balmain Teachers' College and the setting up of a library in North Sydney School. He then discusses his appointment to Forest Lodge as a teacher-librarian and doing his degree at night at Sydney University. Saxby then talks about travelling overseas and doing a project which looked at the development of school libraries and children's literature. On his return he was appointed to Picton High School, teaching English. He then discusses his appointment to Newcastle Teachers College; working at Alexander Mackie College as a lecturer in English in 1959 and doing his MA on the history of Australian children's literature which was later published as "A history of Australian children's literature 1841 to 1941".
Saxby then describes the later two volumes which continued the theme and the re-working of vol. 1 which was published in 1998 as "Offered to children". He then considers the changing nature of children's literature; re-working vol. 2 which will be entitled, "Images of Australia 1940 to 1970" and his decision to do it as a PhD thesis and a commercial publication. Saxby then talks about his belief in the value of literature and the development of the person; involvement with Children's Book Council; views on Book of the Year awards and his involvement with IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People award. He then talks about Australian publishing; publications "Great deeds of superheroes", "Great deeds of heroic women" and "Millennium book of myth and story"; role of children's literature in Australian culture and the changing view of the Aborigine in children's literature and his plans for the future.
