- Biography/History:
-
Jacob Nayinggul was a member of the Manilakarr clan of the East Alligator River in west Arnhem Land, N.T. As a baby he was taken by his parents to the settlement of Gunbalanya (officially known as Oenpelli Mission) where he learnt English as well as the traditional Kunwinjku, Gagadju and Urningangk languages. As a young man Nayinggul was tutored by Paddy Compass Namathara, a distinguished bark painter and shamanic figure. He was initiated into the Wubarr and regularly participated in other indigenous rites. He rose to become an esteemed leader in Gunbalanya and beyond. He opposed uranium mining and contributed to the establishment and management of Kakadu National Park. In 2011 he organised a ceremony for the internment of human remains from Gunbalanya that were stolen by the American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem land and eventually repatriated from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, U.S.A. He died in Gunbalanya, N.T. in 2012.
