Doug Sunderland, born in 1925, discusses his family background; discovering that he was adopted; he and his brother being placed in Melbourne Orphanage, Middle Brighton, Vic. (1929); daily activities; chores; the treatment of bed wetters; punishments and abuse; stammering; rewards for good behaviour; the dormitories; food; clothing; schooling; other children at the orphanage; visits from his mother; birthdays and Christmases; holidays outside of the orphanage; presents and possessions; leaving the orphanage; meeting his new step-father; his step-father's experience as a Child migrant; happiness at home; leaving school at age 14; working as a mechanic; marriage; managing money; parenting and responsibility; buying a house; hosting children from the orphanage for their holidays; his brother's experiences in the orphanage; his aspirations for his family; illness and deaths in his family.
Sunderland discusses the physical and psychological effects of institutionalisation; the effect of his upbringing and life decisions on his children; difficulty obtaining official records; his relationship with his wife and children; raising his grandchild; pets; extensive travelling and his love of travel; his motorbike travels featuring in television documentaries; becoming a public figure; discovering documents about his childhood; receiving a written apology from the Victorian State Government; his appreciation of support groups; reunions; resilience; his feelings about the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants Oral History Project; his great-grandchildren; his ongoing contact with his siblings.
