Gary Johns, born in Kensington, Melbourne (1952), discusses his childhood and family background; growing up in Melbourne; schooling; experiences and acquaintances at Monash University; sporting interests and hockey career; teaching; joining the Australian Labor Party (ALP) (1972); working in the ALP National Secretariat in Canberra (1978-82); moving to Canberra; accommodation in Canberra; returning to Victoria in the office of Ken Cogle; marriage (1984); serving as the member for Petrie, Queensland (1987-1996); his electorate; Queensland ALP politics; memories of Old Parliament House; his maiden speech and first caucus meeting; becoming Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations (1993); becoming Special Minister of State and Vice-President of the Executive Council (1994); reflections on Prime Ministers Hayden, Hawke and Keating.
