- Biography/History:
-
Auto engineer, aviator, journalist, and reliability motor trial competitor. Born Corowa, NSW, in 1888. Mechanic, motor trade driving instructor, salesman, and chauffeur in pre-war Melbourne and Brisbane, Lang was commissioned in the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. Illness and injury ruled out overseas active service. A flight instructor for the NSW Government, he was Temp. C.O. No. 4 Squadron in 1916 until returning to the UK in Jan 1917. After training squadron home service and work for the Technical Department in the Ministry of Munitions in 1918, he tested single-engine high altitude bombers at Martlesham Experimental Station in Suffolk. On 2 Jan 1919, with an observer, he set a new altitude record (unofficial) in a Napier Lion powered DH 9. He wrote for the Sydney Mail as its motor columnist (‘Napier Lion’), 1920-1924, and for The Pastoral Review (‘Gnome’) from 1913. Undertook pioneer flight-assisted commissions for Lebbeus Hordern from Sydney to Launceston and return in 1921 and for Frank Hurley’s second expedition to Papua in 1922. Lang was killed near Camperdown, VIC, in 1924 while attempting to break the world 24 hour light car touring record.
